In the early years Houtong had many coal mines and once had the highest output in Taiwan. After the mining industry declined and the population moved away, stray cats gravitated to the area and were cared for by local residents. Owing to the efforts of cat lovers, Houtong has become a paradise for cats, and cat-related buildings, souvenirs, and landscaping art can be found everywhere.
