As early as the reign of Qing Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722) gold and coal mines were established in Mudan and the area was once mentioned in the same breath as Jiufen and Jinguashi, as one of Taiwan's three gold mountains.

In recent years, Peony Old Street has been turned into an art-creating block. The brightly colored peonies on the walls, 3D art paintings and flying birds welcome tourists, as well as local art creation workshops and coffee shops, all of which breathe new life into the streets.

Mudan Station is one of the few half-moon platforms in Taiwan. In order to solve the problem of a dropping gradient, a special curve was built to slow down trains. As a result, as locomotives enter the station they form a beautiful arc shape, making this a must visit destination for train fans.
