In the past, the main source of income for local residents was the planting of tea and the dyeing plant Strobilanthes cusia (Nees) Kuntze. Tea merchants and dye merchants who traveled between Taipei and Yilan used Shenkeng as their distribution center and this was the predecessor of Shenkeng Old Street.

Shenkeng is most famous for bean curd dishes and because the local water is sweet, the bean curd produced is white and delicate. However, Shenkeng is not just about delicious food as nearby Wanfu Eco Park is a good place to enjoy tung flowers. In addition, hiking trails are also highly recommended. Chashan Historic Trail and Paozilun Hiking Trail offer idyllic rural scenery, and visitors can observe a waterfall from the Paozilun Waterfall Observation Deck.
