Nangang is located south of the Keelung River. It was a stopping point for early settlers transporting goods and engaging in trade by ship. In the past, there was a train station, and the ease of transportation by water and road made Nangang prosperous. Later, due to the siltation of the Keelung River, Nangang gradually became a heavy industrial area, and is now a smart economic and trade park.

Modern day Nangang has an advanced and competitive software industrial park -- Nangang Exhibition Hall-- which is an important international exhibition center. It is also a transport hub comprised of Taiwan Railway, Taiwan high-speed rail and the MRT. The Taipei Music Center in the district is a large performing arts venue that can hold up to 5,000 spectators and is an important pop music cultural exchange center. Together with the "National Biotechnology Research Park," established by Academia Sinica in Nangang, Nangang is an important center for software development and biotechnology research in Taiwan.

Many ancient trails on Danlan National Greenway South Route are located in the Nangang Mountains, including Zhongpu Mountain Trail, Tiaomi Old Trail, Miaogaotai Trail, Shumei Old Trail, and Daozhaohu Mountain Trail. Nangang Mountain is adjacent to Sishou Mountain, making it an excellent choice for those wanting to enjoy the mountains for leisure.
