Yangtingli Historic Trail is named after Yang Tingli, who was born during the reign of Qing Emperor Qianlong (1735-1796) and served as the prefect of Taiwan government and in other senior government positions. He pacified uprisings, expelled pirates, and successfully established Kavalan local government office.

Generally, visitors  also traverse the connected Canguangliao Historic Trail and Shumeiping Historic Trail, but Yangyingli Historic Trail is more challenging because the route is rougher, and in some places hikers have to use their hands and feet to climb or walk through water. As such, the trail is more suited to experienced hikers looking for a challenge.
