Shumei Historic Trail is located in Nangang District, Taipei City. The trail passes through a forest of plum trees, hence the name. Shumei in Chinese refers to bayberries which ripen from May to June. At that time, beautiful red berries decorate the branches of the trees along the trail.

The historic trail is mostly bamboo forest densely covered with ferns, and the mountain route is a relatively primitive dirt path with many steep slopes. Some sections are narrow and overgrown with grass and trees. Along the route, the road forks at Guanyin cave where a Guanyin Buddha statue is enshrined. After the cave there is less shade along the trail, but the view becomes more expansive until it reaches the end of the trail at Thumb Mountain.

Thumb Mountain gets its name because it resembles the eponymous digit from a distance. To reach this point, visitors must climb onto the giant rock at the top of the mountain from where they can see the magnificent scenery of Taipei Basin and the surrounding mountains in a 360-degree view. It is a highly recommended viewing spot.
