In the early years, this was a power line protection road between Shitsao and Bihu, used by Taipower staff to maintain high-voltage pylons and power cables in the mountains. Therefore, several huge electricity pylons can be seen along the route.

The Shitsao Bihu Trail is divided into two sections at the 46.1 kilometer mark of Beiyi Highway. The "Shitsao Section" is more challenging with a route that is narrow, steep and winding. Some sections are covered by Silver Grass, and it is all a dirt pathway. Hikers are advised to carry trekking poles as an aid on the slippery parts of the trail, passing through neatly planted tea farms before the exit on Beiyi Highway.

The “Bihu Section” is wider and there are auxiliary ropes on the steep slopes. The route is made up of dirt and gravel paths covered with fallen leaves. Sometimes it is necessary to step over shallow streams. The exit for the Bihu section is Bihu Second Bridge.
